Default detail of a broom

A few questions:

I want the main focus to be the odd little curl in the middle of the broom. Is that where your eye goes?

I also want to emphasize the wonderful texture I saw in the surfaces of the broom and the cord. That was my reason for the cropping. Does it work?

Also is the B & W conversion effective? I'm not always certain that I have enough range when I work with black and whites.

Thanks for any comments!

Eileen, interesting shot, If i want to have a focal point to be noticed, I tend to use the aperture to my advantage . Open it right up to about f/2.8 and pick out the spot you want in focus, mind you it comes at a cost of losing the detail in other areas, B&W works for me fine, looks great.

I like this shot. My eye went straight to that little squiggle.

I did try one with a more open aperture but to my eye, it made the broom look flatter. I preferred the dimension of this one and tried to use the light to emphasize the squiggle.

Thanks for the comments!
