Default Backyard shot

I recently got my first DSLR (canon T1i) and i have started to play around with it. I got some decent shots this morning since the sun was low and strong. There is one shot that i would like some advice since i feel something is wrong with is but i cant figure it out.

Here it is:

F-stop: f/3.5
Exposure: 1/125 sec.
ISO speed: 800
Focal Length: 18mm
Flash mode: On, Fired <<<< i used my hand to bounce the flash off a brown/reddish fence

Please note that i reduced the brightness of about 10% in Canon's editing software. I cant really figure why i gotta lower the brightness in most of my outdoor shots when my exposure scale is at 0.

Thanks
Matt

needs a closer crop. get rid of the green grass. For starters that will help a lot! If you could also carefully clone out the bright white spots on the rocks, that would help as well

Thanks for the feedback! I think ill re-shoot this on a different time of the day. The white spots on the rocks is the 10 in the morning sun going trough the fence on the right. I will also try to frame better to loose the background bush. I will repost in this thread when i do so. Thanks for the insights!

Your aperture is wide open (f/3.5) so your sensor is getting a lot of light, maybe that is the reason you see the photos quite brighter. Try shooting with a closer aperture value, well if you want a shallow depth of field, you should not go with the lower values.

I am assuming you are shooting with the kit lense (18-55mm), so try to shoot the same image on 35mm focal length at f/8, I´ve read f/8 @ 35mm is kind of the sweet spot on that type of lenses.

Cheers!

I am indeed shooting with the 18-55 kit. I never tought there could be "sweet spots" on lenses. Ill try shooting the same setup with different values and compare the to find what i prefer the most. I have some testing to do!
