Default Bluestone texture

This is a piece of a building on the college campus where I went to school. We were visiting and the light seemed right to capture the texture of this particular stone. I cropped a thin strip from the left side that showed the plaza beyond the edge of the wall because I didn't think it added anything.

Compositionally, what do you think about the mortar lines, DoF, etc.?

I welcome your comments.

Cheers...

Always good to be aware of the light and how it effects subjects. The mortar lines add a nice diagonal element.

The biggest problem for me is that the subject is not particularly compelling. You need something to hold the viewer's interest.

Thanks for the feedback, Saralonde. I enjoy textures, and I have lots of shots of interesting ones in my library. Maybe I'm thinking more abstractly about them, but they do lack a "subject" per se.

Would leaving more of the background in the frame to give context have helped? There's nothing there but an empty plaza and thought it actually detracted. A vibrant cafe or busy campus scene would have been nice but not to be on this day.

I've left town, so can't re-try the shot, but for next time...

Regarding the dof, I think I might have tried to get it all (or at least more) in sharp focus.

Regarding the mortar lines, I like the two diagonal ones. The two vertical ones don't work as well. If possible I think I'd try for a crop that provides more symmetry with the vertical lines. It seems kind of unbalanced with one right up against the edge of the frame like that.
