Default Paintbrush

Does the blue shadow make this photo look a little sloppy?

exif:
shutter: 0.3
aperature: f5.0
ISO: 100
focal length: 50mm

taken with a canon 50mm f1.8 prime
on a tripod with a remote shutter. used a flash with a peice of white postorboard to reflect the flash.

The fact that the shadow is cut off makes it look a bit sloppy. If you included the full shadow it would be more natural.
I actually find that the image is too tight in the frame - the subject needs a bit of space around it to breath - and depth of field is too shallow with little sharp detail which tends to make it difficult to look at.
There is potential there, I hope you can take some time to experiment further.

thanks. i was using a very small background and did not have much legroom. and since i was using a 50mm 1.8 which makes it hard not to fill the frame with the 1.6 veiw crop.

You might also try leaning the brushes to the right. My eye tends to keep being pulled to the top left, which is awkward. Moving the brushes to the right might also balance the shadow in the image.

I agree also.
After following the the paint brush to the point of focus, I find myself looking for the end of the shadow.
