Default Barn door and ivy

I just got my first digital SLR last week, so I'm still getting to know it intimately. I shot this door this morning, hence the diagonal sunlight across the door.

I'm looking for any C&C on the lighting, composition, and anything else that stands out (PP?). What's the balance with overexposing when there's light and shadow outdoors?

I really love this brick building, the old style door and the ivy that is starting to slowly take over, however I don't feel like my image is a good representation of it all.

Thanks!

I think this door can make a good subject and you are on the right track but you need to try to take the shot when it has more even light on the entire scene. As it is with the light coming across like that it blows out the upper portion of the photo. If it is an accessible subject for you to shoot I would keep trying different approaches to it as it is a nice subject and would be good practice. Keep it up!

Thanks for your feedback, M. I wanted to resubmit a photo for you to look at, with different lighting conditions. It's taking longer than usual due to the popularity of the parking lot in the evening near this building. Cars park up next to the door, making it impossible to get a clear shot. I will take another one and hope for your opinion as well, as soon as I can get the dog out of bed before 7am, instead of evening!

I really, really like the concept and composition here. But, I agree - that huge blob of light from the sun is distracting!

I have the same issue at my local botanical gardens. I really would like to capture better pictures of some flowers and trees there, but the hours they are open are bad hours for sun. 9am-7pm usually yield bright sun this time of year, and I'd like to take photos at 5:30am, or maybe 8pm.

Since this has the potential to be a very cool photo, I would suggest doing as much as you can to capture this shot at a better time of day! :-)

This is a cool subject for a photo, but yes, too much sun. Also, I think I would play with some cropping.I think the grate (lower left) and the little box ( middle right) are mildly distracting. I don't imagine it's possible, but could the door be opened a little to create some shadow and tease us about what's behind it ?
