Smile Randome Clicks

I have recently switched from Sony DSC H10 to Nikon D3000. So I am still to get acquainted with the SLR. I have been trying to learn the functionality and features, and its been 4 days. Here is one of them, please let me know how you find it. Your suggestions will help me learn and improve my photography.

They are Kidney Beans. It took me some 10 clicks to say to myselves... OK this is nice one : )

Camera : Nikon D3000
Exposure : 0.033 sec (1/30)
Aperture : f/4.8
Focal Length : 32 mm
Focal Length : 32.7 mm
ISO Speed : 200

What did you do between each of those ten clicks?

It demonstrates that you can get a narrow depth of field with your camera but doesn't seem to go beyond just being a learning shot. I'd suggest three possible avenues you could pursue to improve your skill:

1. Would it be better if the nearest beans were in focus?

2. How could the overall composition be changed to give a stronger sense of design?

3. What effect would different white balance modes have?
