I have had to study a lot of styles of art; some I learned to love, others not so much. One of my favorites is abstract art. For the most part, abstract art is about lines, colors, shapes and spaces arranged in a way that speaks to us on a subconscious level. Most of the time, though not always, there is not a recognizable subject. I make it a point to look for scenes like this and photograph them as often as possible, though they tend to be rare. They are among my favorite images.
The day after Christmas I was hiking at Paris Mountain State Park just outside Greenville, SC, when I spotted the following scene. At first I thought, "How nice." and moved on. But the more I thought about it the more I felt compelled to make this photograph. I am now very glad I did, though it has presented a bit of a conundrum for me. Everything in the image is clearly recognizable, and yet there is an unmistakable abstract feeling to it. I suspect that has to do with the fact that there is no star to this show. There is, at least in my eyes,a certain subtlety to the arrangement of the items and the feeling they portray. Can you see it? What do you think? ![]() Note: For some of you, this is going to sound a very strange way to talk about photographs. It's OK. Abstract art is something of an acquired taste. I promise not to make you feel dumb if you don't 'get it' , nor will I take offense if you seriously don't like it.EXIF Aperture: f3.2 Shutter speed 1/200 ISO: 200 Focal length: 19.4mm White balance: Custom 4250° K
