Default Art Show Help

I took some photos at an art show recently. The sketches were mainly done in black pen over white canvas. Here is a sample of what I have. Nothing looks ok to me - the background is off colour, the pen strokes are not clear either. I took the photos in Raw and though maybe there are things I could do to salvage the day. I am baffled - its not just what I did wrong, but can't find what went right. Please help.

EXIF INFO: Canon 50D, 24-105mm f4L, ISO 100; 65mm; f5.6; 1/40sec - no flash.

i think the camera is measuring the overall image which is predominantly white that is why it renders it gray. it is measuring the white paper. you should shoot in manual or if you like to shoot in av mode, you should override the measure, by at least 1 stop.
if you can not reshoot this try fixing it with levels. move the black and white slider towards the center where the histogram begins to rise.

Here is a resized photo. It was my last chance, but I took one each that was exposed by one more stop. Its not too great either. from Ed's comment, it sounds that I may be able to improve the phtos with some guidance. Thanks.
