I like your composition and the contrast is really attention grabbing. The colors are great. What bothers me is that I get a feel that it needs a bit of straightening. Feels like it's leaning down to the right.

First, answer a question for me; what is the difference between a composition and a snapshot? A snapshot is a collection of one or more items photographed with no particular attention paid to how they are arranged. A composition is all about how the items in the shot are arranged. By that description, this is closer to a snapshot. True, you have some vertical elementsworking for you with the doors and the column. You also have some angles working for you with the cobblestones and the man's legs. But these two forms do not work together to form a unified whole. In a way, you have the makings of two separate compositions that are forced together. Whether or not certain things are perfectly level in this shot is not nearly as imporant as making the different elements work together.
The other parts, as mentioned by those above. are great; the colors are interesting, the locale in exotic and there is a quiet mood that pervades. Have the young man stand and lean against a door or column to provide an additional vertical element and you would have had it.

Are you also saying the scene was not composed in the camera frame? Do you feel it was a waste of time to take this photo? I'm just trying to understand your suggestions.

Lee - I still have a lot to learn about composition, so can I ask few questions?
First, do all photos need only vertical or horizontal elements to be properly composed? What about the energy that can be created by having a variety of diagonals, etc? Second, if the horizontal bench was still there and the man was standing/leaning, would this be a well-composed photo? And third, to me, this is a unified composition: a man is outside a tea parlor, relaxing and sitting down, while drinking tea. Is that too simple of an analysis? To me, this is a well composed photo. But, I'm always happy to be educated.
