Default Relfections

This is my 100th post and I wish I had something better to put up. Unfortunately, here goes! This is a picture I took in my hotel room while on a trip last weekend to an island called Koh Talu in Thailand.

Reflections

EXIF info
Camera: Canon EOS Kiss X2
Exposure: 0.1 sec (1/10)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 44 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

There is some amount of noise in the picture which I couldnt get rid of and I couldnt bring down the ISO as I was shooting this hand held.

Apart from that, I would like critique basically on framing and if there is anything that can be done to make this picture stand out more.

Thanks for looking!

Hi avishek24,

This is an interesting image. The noise doesn't bother me; I think it is OK. (Being inside, you could have moved a chair or a table around and put the camera on that. Support doesn't have to be a tripod.)

What is most interesting thing in the image is the symmetry: the lamp between the two headboards, framed by the mirror. However, it isn't symmetrical; everything is off angle. To get everything perfectly lined up you would have to shoot with the camera facing the mirror directly. Which, of course, means that you, the photographer, would be in the image. What I would have done is instead of moving to the left and shooting to the right, I would have gotten on the floor between the two beds and shot up into the mirror. That way the left to right symmetry would be there, but the photographer wouldn't be in the reflection. Does that make sense? Maintaining the symmetry and shooting from a low angle I think would make the image really striking.

I hope that helps.

KG

You should look for symmetry in this capture and at least straighten the mirror in post processing.

Default Thank you

Thank you so much for your response LoveDSLR. I did try and straighten the picture but because it was taken from one side, it tended to look slanted from one side everytime I fixed the other. I like what you have done with it though.

Thanks for your response as well, KansaiGreenie. I agree with your regarding using a chair or a table to stabilize. Will keep that in mind next time. However, what I was thinking was, if I was on the floor in between the beds, wouldnt most of the headboards of the bed and a major part of the lamp not show in the reflection (since I would be viewing it from much lower)? Also, as far as symmetry is concerned (I could be totally wrong about this and seems like in this case, I am), I honestly thought that asymmetrical was looking better and therefore I didnt bother getting an absolutely symmetric shot. Thank you for your ideas and next time I get an opportunity like this one, I will definitely try to make it symmetrical
