Default Angel in glass globe - again.

Hi,

I've made a real effort to shoot the Angel that I mentioned in another thread. I'd like some comments on composition as I genuinely don't know if its right or wrong instinct tells me its okay but that's just instinct.

How about the brightness levels does having the overall image so dark detract from the image as a whole or does it just set a tone?

Also yes I have noticed the damn fingerprints. That's because I was adjusting the composition without thinking "ooh here is a shiny object I shouldn't touch it".

Finally DOF would this have been improved with a different focal length adjusting the time accordingly.

All comments welcome.

I love the lighting in this shot. Just wanted to ask, did you intentionally keep one of the flames out or was that just coincidental? Also, I would have really liked it if the reflection on the top wasnt there so as to completely show the angel on the subject.

Yeah it was intentional blowing one of the flames out. I thought it may give some interest to the picture. Would it have been better if I hadn't? Remove the base competely or light it?

Also I agree about the reflection at the top.

It does draw attention if you keep that one flame out. I like it this way.... was just curious earlier which is why I asked.

Lighting looks good to me as well. My only concern is the candle holder at the right which was cut off. Might be better if you have cropped that out.

Cheers!

My two cents.

I removed the cutoff candle on the right with a Golden Triangle crop.

To add balance to the image, consider using three, a multiple of three or an odd number of candles.

I agree about the cutoff. Thanks Eric.

Good crop. Yeah I did put an odd number of candles set up initially. As I was moving the camera arround however I forgot to focus with an odd number in focus. The shots pretty much SOOC so I'll probably apply that crop to the final version.

Thanks lovedslr.

I really like the suggested crop - it really tightens things up

What I am finding distracting is the candle reflection on the top of the globe. What would using candlelight from behind look like? Keep up the experiment!

I agree with you on this one. The candle reflection blocks out the angel completely. I can't really tell what is in the globe. You're coming along from your other shots though.

Try taking a candle and lighting it from the back like others have said. Perhaps put a foil "reflector" behind the candle to focus the candlelight.

Good work! Keep trying and you'll nail it eventually.

Hmm a foil reflector. That would be picked up in the refracted image behind the globe. Its one of the reasons I used a disassembled wooden box.

So I guess a reshoot is in order but I've now assembled the wooden box. Which means I'd need to come up with another improptu location.

Anyway thanks for your suggestions guys they really help.
