Hey guys I am looking for some feedback on the following pic which I have titled "Return to the Earth". I'd love to know what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong. Thanks!

I assume you're going for the leaf, normally up in the tree, being juxtaposed with the gritty ground. Interesting, but to me this image is missing something. The leaf is too similar to everything else - in tone, texture, color.
Maybe that's what you were going for - having the leaf nearly blend in to the background as part of the "return". If so, that works. The short depth of field even works - the leaf is sharp in the center, but gets softer on the edges, just like the rest of ground. But I'd personally prefer more contrast to add interest to the image. Perhaps a more colorful leaf, or a dull leaf on a green background. If the blending of subject and background is what you were going for, I think this dull leaf on dead, brown grass could be cool. There's still more contrast, as the texture of the flat leaf and the grass is very different. Hope that helps! |

In my opinion, the idea of showing a leaf returning to the earth is very creative -- nice title! I agree with John Li that the leaf color is similar to the ground color. That's why I would go with black and white here.
SuperDan points out that the edges of the leaf are out of focus. To avoid that I would crop the photo to the upper right corner, something like that:

Go to the picture you want to use from Flickr and click on "All Sizes" (above your picture). Select the medium size option. In the first box below your image, highlight the text and copy it. You're going to paste this text directly into your DPS message box (the box you get after you click on the "New Thread" or "Reply To Thread" buttons). Click on the "Preview Post" button and you should see your picture imbedded in the post. If you click on your picture it will take you back to your Flickr page with the original image.
