unsure about lighting

Hi all - I've just recently gotten back into photography and am craving some critique and feedback.

This picture was created with some rudimentary lighting - being a couple of lamps with their shades removed held on either side of the subject. And then I adjusted the contrast and color in PSE8.

Any and all thoughts are more than welcome. Thanks in advance.

i think that the color is there and spot on, but, i do not get the composition ... im lost in the picture and dont really know what you are trying to convey here.

I have to agree on the subject matter - no idea what it is, and it appears to not be an intentional abstract... Maybe even a title would lead the viewer to a different conclusion? Why did you choose the text underneath? What is it?

Now that it's been a while since I took the picture - I'm lost in the composition too! Great feedback. At the time I was just trying to have some fun with the distortion caused by this small upsidedown glass bowl, which is placed on top of Harper's Magazine (their famous Index). Really the text means nothing symbolic. But, ultimately, the shot is lacking.
