I just took this picture with my nikon d80 plus 50 mm f1.8. It's good and I like it, but it's not moving or stunning. where did I go wrong? why is my subject so dead?
(photo in attachment, hope I did well, it's my first post here!!!)

Well, it's hard to tell without the Exif. Please see this thread, posted at the top of all critique forums.

The settings would help because I'm not sure of the DOF, but it doesn't look right.

Will comment further once you post the Exif.

I really like the photograph, in fact I love it. From what you say it is not what you wanted to capture, and to help we need to know the exif data and the set up for the photo and what you were after.

This lady Ingrid from flickr has some lovely flower images, some very similar to your shot here.

ok, here is the original file. If the EXIF data doesn't show up, I post them here.
Metering: Spot
shutter: 1/1600
aperture: f1.8
°Exp: 0.0
Focal lenght: 50 mm
ISO: 1600

thanks Jamie, I will follow her, she's great!
I think my photo doesn't "tell a story" as much as hers do.

I think the image is good. I love the DoF that the 1.8 f-stop gives. From a compositional standpoint, I think you could have angled the camera a bit so that the stem of the flower was on a diagonal line going towards the corner--it may have made for a bit more dramatic look and perhaps not centered it quite so much. Frankly, it's a well-shot picture of a flower. Another one. After seeing thousands of images of flowers (and taking probably as many myeslef!) I just can't get excited about them, and I wonder if that may be what you're feeling too. The image is good, technically sound, well shot.

I think your original file photo has more pop because of the color. Your edited photo is muted and giving off a blah feeling. I'd go back and work with that original file again and work toward more contrast between the flower and the background and keep the tones bright which I think will give the shot more life.

thanks for the advice. I will learn composition and yes maybe the colors were the thing which had to be more emphasised about this photo....
