Default Mamiya Cameras??

I just watched the show called "From the Edge with Peter Lik" and I noticed he's shooting a Mamayia Camera.

I've never heard of that brand, are they really high end systems?

Yeah. Medium format, like Hasselblad. The RZ system is pretty popular.

Mamiya is medium format, film or digital. Competitors to companies like Hasselblad. Not cheap, but not Hasselblad expensive either. Depending on the kit, anywhere form about $10k+ (US)

I owned a Mamiya C330 twin lens reflex film (120) camera in the 1970's.
Much more reasonably priced than a Hasselblad or Bronica (but then it was not a SLR). It was a good camera and 120 transparencies (slides) blew 35mm slides out of the water.

WOW!!!!
So they're at a different level than Nikon and Canon?

I was curious.

A Nikon or Canon full frame sensor is 36x24mm. The Mamiya Sensors are twice that. They're big. And higher res (in the 40-50mp range). They're WONDERFUL.

Different products, and sometimes, different uses.
Its another tool.

For deliberate and planned shooting where you want better IQ than than smaller formats can give you then yes. Think fashion, products, landscapes then a larger format would be the way to go.

There is another level above this as well - large format (4x5 or 10x8) view cameras (I have never used one).

However for capturing the action, like sports etc, then Canon or Nikon with the right lens.

i still have 2 rb6x7 bodies, a 50mm lens, a 100 and a 250 and 2 film backs. i used this everyday when i was still active in photography till i sold all of the studio equipments and retired. it is good camera, but it is now gathering dust in its aluminum case. i look at it once in awhile and remember the days...

I use my RB67 for B&W landscapes mostly. And some portraits. I love medium format and If I ever hit the lottery I will spring for a digital back and all the goodies. Probably get a view camera as well. An 8x10 negative will give amazing prints if the photographer does his part. Jim
