Default Favorite Walk-Around Lens?

This is probably a very old, repetitive question, but photographic technology is changing quickly these days. What all purpose lens does the majority like to have on their cameras, while scouting for potential captures?

Also, any thoughts on the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO would be appreciated.

.
I have switched back and forth between 18-55/3.5-5.6 zoom, 50/1.4 and 35/2.8 macro. Sometimes I like the range from wide angle to short tele of the zoom, sometimes I want the speed of the fast 50 and sometimes the combination of macro and "normal" appeal to me.

One thing that has helped me recently is the fact that I can crop a wide angle shot to make it more close up but I cannot crop a telephoto shot to make it wider.

Therefore if I am taking only one lens it will be the 18-55 as long as the light is good.
