Default Manual Flash...help!

Hi there - as a developing photographer I took the opportunity to pick up a Miranda 630 CD flash off a well known internet auction, cheap. I am aware that in shutter, aperture and manual settings, I should be able to use this flash with my E500 with no trouble. However, I can only get the two to communicate after I have pressed the test button on the flash and then semi-press the shutter button (locking the frame). What am I doing or not doing that should allow me to just take a picture manually, without the FAF! Probably a simple answer - though Olympus support could not enlighten me.

Thanks - D.
