Chris,

Just bought the same package 2/12/2008, and have found the learning curve from point and shoot to dSLR almost going back on itself, but, I am having a great time learning. Read the manuals and get into the posts from this site (there are some others) but not nearly as good.

One thing I haven't worked our is how to specify that I have an SLR not a point and shoot. Any noe give me a hint?

It means that due to Olympus' 2x crop factor, their 40-150mm lens is pretty much the same as what you'd get on a 35mm camera with an 80-300mm lens. So your 50mm lens is the equivalent of a 100mm lens on a 35mm camera, the 14-45mm lens is the equivalent of a 28-90mm lens on a 35mm camera, etc.

Also adding in there: Olympus E-5xx Group

The point and shoot designation under your name is there because of the number of posts you've made. Not the type of camera you use.

I've noticed on some SLRs that there's a snapping noise when a photo is taken. Maybe I'm not using the correct term for that, but does the E-520 provide any sort of sound effect when taking a photo?

Thanks
The 520 uses its built in flash to illuminate a low light level scene for autofocus. The problem with this is that often several flashes are required. If you are photographing a human you will very likely get some shots of annoyed faces, not the pleasant faces you may have hoped for.

I strongly recommend buying an external flash (I have the fl-36). This has a red light illuminator.
