Default Student found an old Olympus...

Today, one of my students brought an older Olympus into my room asking me if I could get it to turn on. Umm... I don't know anything about Olympus cameras, but I told her I'd try.

So, I'm asking you guys.

It's an Olympus C (?) 2100 2.1 megapixels - uses AA batteries and one of the huge memory cards. (There wasn't one in there and I don't know what they're called.)

Anyone have any idea about what this camera needs to work? There aren't any noticeable defects. It still looks good... but as we all know, that doesn't mean much of anything. lol

Anyone have any tips to try??

Yes! Kodiak - that's it! Wow - I googled it and got nothin'. Maybe I mis-typed. Okay - that's the camera. You have any suggestions on how to make it work? lol

Did putting batteries in it get it to turn on and the usual stuff?
It needs a SmartMedia card, which I think are pretty rare anymore.

I see some on ebay, but they are very very expensive.
(20$ for 128mb?!?!)

Ah, SmartMedia, the bane of my existence.

They don't go any larger than 128MB, they're expensive (how do you double the value of an Olympus C4000Z? Put the memory card in! ) and you'll only find them on the used market. They're not rare as such, Ebay is awash with them but the prices suck. $20 for 128MB is cheap. Seriously.

It should power up without a memory card in place though.

Electronics being what they are, it could be pristine on the outside and as dead as a can of Spam on the inside.

Indeed, if there is no "magic smoke" left inside... then better left for dead!

You know. I think I have an old smartmedia card somewhere at home, with my first digital camera. The only way to download the pictures was, get this, to put it into the PCMIA slot on the laptop Good times!

Looks like it is quite useful as an infared camera as well

Okay, so here's where it lies....

Said student has no money, no computer and no way to get this camera fixed, but she's keeping it. Even after I explained the lack of cost effectiveness of doing so. Especially with the (what was it you guys said???) lack of "magic smoke". Yeah, nothing I tried got the thing on. I did suggest she try and plug it into an AC adapter and see if it came on that way.

What can I say?

She wants to try and fix it.... umm... not sure how, because of previous statement referring to $$$, but more power to her.

Thanks you guys!!
