For a short zoom, probably the 14-54. I believe it's 2.8-3.5, but don't quote me on that.

Dave
You are correct. The kit lens is the 14-42 but I wanted something better so got the 14-54 since it has excellent reviews and then went for the 50mm f/2 since most of my shots are indoors of my show cats under dim lighting.

I am new to photography and just bought my first SLR - the E-510 w/ the two kit lenses.

I bought the 12-60 SWD and it's an amazing lens!!! Kinda pricey, but I'm glad I spent the extra money for it. I was considering the 14-54, but thought the 12-60 would be a good investment, especially if I decide to get the E3 someday. The extra 2 mm (12-14) makes a pretty big difference.

The camera focuses so much faster and the pics look very nice!!!

I would have recommended the 12-60, but the OP asked for inexpensive. and we're talking about $500 difference between the 12-60 and the 14-54. I do agree that if one could afford it, it would be a top recommendation.

Thank you all for your much needed responses, it's nice to talk to someone who is familiar with a product from use instead of a sales person. Thanx again.

The proble is that most of the Olympus (Zuiko) lenses are not as fast as their Canonikon equivalents. it's really hard to find a Zuiko lens with F 1.x.

Anyway, Leica have fast ones such as 25mm f1.4 but I guess this one is really expenisve or a Sigma 24mm f1.8 or 30mm f1.4

You may also fine more lenses for you camera on the following page:

And finally, let me ask you. Do you want a fast lense to take photos at night or to shoot sports etc? Or you are into portraits and want a lense with shallow depth of field (bokeh)?
