okay, i hate to sound stupid but im going to ask anyway! that is the way to learn, right? okay, so im looking at the nikon 85mm f1.4 mainly for shooting kids basketball games. i posted and you all said that would be a fast lens for this. my ? is------yes, it will work if i can get pretty close to the boys but what if i also need to zoom in some????? i knwo by my ?'s you all know im learning.thanks for being patient and teaching me!!!!

You can also crop your picture using software to do a "digital zoom". Keep in mind noisy pictures will not be "cropable".
Have you think about renting the lens ? It will give you a better idea if it's the right lens for you before spending your money. Hope this help

lensrentals.com is one online rental place--there are lots. Also, you do know that the 85/1.4 costs $1200? I think you may be thinking the 85/1.8 ($480).
The bigger issue is what body are you using? The Nikkor 85/1.4 (and 85/1.8) are not AF-S, which means they won't autofocus on the entry level bodies like the D40, D60, D3000, and D5000. At that point, you'd be just as well off using the $260 manual focus Rokinon 85/1.4. And without autofocus, your keeper rate on sports is going to be very low. You'd probably be better off going for a 70-200 f/2.8 zoom in that case.

You're going to want some zoom. If you don't have it, the only way (other than cropping) will be to walk closer to your subjects. Not always feasible.
I'd be looking at an f2.8 zoom lens for sure. |
