Default Will this work?

Hello All,

I'm taking my buddy's d90 out for a test shoot and am wondering if my Verbatim 32gb SDHC card will work. Will I be able to shoot 4.5 fps for decent bursts without issues? It has a read speed of 20mb/sec and writes at 9mb/sec. Let me know if this will work or if something else would be better. Thanks!!!

It all depends on how many frames in a row you shoot. For example if you shoot 5 or 6 frames by holding down the shutter then let it up, you'll be fine. The buffer can handle that then write to the card. If you just keep the shutter depressed some where around 10 or more it will not be able to keep up. If your shooting that many in a row just go ahead and shoot the d90 in video.

Thanks. Don't think I'll be really using the video much, but it would be nice to try it. Will I be able to get the 5 or 6 frames in RAW?

As long as you're shooting just RAW, not RAW + JPEG, 5 or 6 shouldn't be an issue, I think the buffer alone holds about that without writing to the card. If you shoot smaller sizes, like JPEG medium/basic, you could shoot a lot more at a time, possibly up to the 99 shots the firmware limits it to.

If you use video, keep in mind it's shooting at a much lower resolution to keep file size down and allow it to transfer to the card fast enough.

Not sure I understand this part. Do you mean that this card is not good enough for the full 720p? I mean, I won't use video much, but....

I meant shooting video isn't a good substitute for rapid shooting ability, since the stills from the video wouldn't look too good. I'm not sure how that card would hold up to fast shots or video, but for reference, a fullsize RAW out of my D90 is ~10MB, so in theory the camera could write ~1 shot/second to the card.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. Appreciate it!
