I am looking to buy my first DSLR camera, have never use one and have only recently been reading up on their use, settings etc.
To that, some time ago the Nikon D40 was recommended, now I know it is an older one and there are newer ones out there that are better, but price point is a consideration right now. Is this still a viable entry into DSLRs? I have been reading on the D3000/D5000 as well - comparative to the D40 are they worth the price (considering the used/refurb deals on D40s any more). Additionally I have considered a Cannon Rebel XS and XSi and an Olympus e-4xx series - any thoughts on comparison? I am really wanting to get into photography - mostly outdoor landscape, buildings with occasional other types and want something that will let me grow for a few years before needing to upgrade, yet as I said price points are a primary consideration at the time. Thanks in advance!

i still use the d40x from time to time great little camera for learning but, if you can maybe go for the D5000, newer tech, 11-point AF system, CMOS image sensor it can record HD Movies to i think.
sorry don't have any experience with the Cannon gear!!

Get the D5000 and be done with it.
