Default Problem with Electronic Range Finder on D60

I recently bought a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lense online to go with my new D60

I read up before about the feature (the electronic range finder) included on the D60 which assists with manual focusing.

However, after playing around with it for a while the view finder still wasn't displaying the electronic rangefinder; it's very frustrating because I'm a beginner and find it very hard to use manual focus. It works with the standard kit lense that came with the camera but not the 50mm one.

I understand that the electronic range finder only works when the aperture is set to f/5.6 or faster and I had made sure that it was.

Help anyone please??

I just look for the in-focus indicator in the lower-left corner of the viewfinder to come on solid as I turn the focus ring on the lens. With the AF 50mm f/1.8D lens, you still have to manually focus the lens because it doesn't have a focus motor in it like your kit lens does.

Not sure what you mean by the electronic range finder. Are you talking about the little green dot that lights up when you are in focus? As far as f/5.6 I think that only refers to the maximum aperature of the lens, not what it is set at.

Did you enable Custom Setting 19 (manual page 73 and 116)?

If you are not in M(anual) mode then the analog exposure display in the viewfinder should become the rangefinder.
