Default Nikon D40?

Is this still considered to be a good first DSLR?

Default D40

Yes, it can be. However, the D3000 and D5000 are the newer "beginner" models. Look at these as well.

I started with one and was very pleased with it until I upgraded a few times and saw some of the features I was missing. You might want to see if you can find a used one for a good price.
