Default WB presets on D5000 - any quick way?

Is there a way to quickly change the WB preset? Like on my walk in the winter sun/shade today? I kind of don't think so but...

(Yes, I did shoot in RAW but would like to avoid the extra processing step if possible.)

Thanks!

I agree, I prefer to set my white balance in camera and not bother later!

While I don't have a D5000, I believe that it has some of the same customizable buttons as other Nikons (such as the D40, D60, D3000). In the Custom settings menu system, you can set the function of the customizable buttons -- one of those functions should be white balance.

Very true, there are a couple of customisable buttons. I'll check it out.

D5000 only has 1 manual preset.
There are 6 pre-programed settings, plus auto.
You can set it from the info screen.
pg. 96 in my users manual.

Ah, I see I was not clear. What I meant was - is there a way to use a white or grey card without going deep into the bowels of the thing in order to set the WB for the next few shots? (As in, not using auto or the pre-programed options.)

Thanks.

if your D-5000 has a "PRE" WB setting that is what you will use to set WB with a white or gray card

OooH Oooooh, wait I know this one.

Program the fn button (by the D5000 logo on the front)

First set WT to Pre as its default in manual modes by doing the following..
>Hit : Menu>Toggle to : Shooting Menu (the camera graphic), OK >White Balance OK> PRE, OK> Preset Manual OK> Measure OK> Overwrite?, NO, OK

Now that is set you can set the function button as follows ....

>Hit : Menu>Toggle to : Custom Setting Menu (the pencil graphic), OK >F Controls, OK >F1 Assign fn Button> WB, OK

Done programming it forever.

Now when in any manual mode you will see the WB is already set to PRE for you. (You can change anytime by holding Fn and using the command dial.)

Here is the clever bit, now you have this set up as default PRE ... by simply pressing and holding (for a second or two) the fn button anytime in manual modes the PRE flashes and you take a picture to aquire the data. So, its hold fn button, take data and your all done!

Or shoot RAW, use the auto and adjust in post.
