Question Nikon D700

I just bought a Nikon D700 and I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I'm in the US Navy and it was shipped to my house a few days after my ship went out to sea. I will be home soon but I'm very excited about it. So, I figured I would get on here to get opinions from everyone. What is your opinion of the Nikon D700?

The D700 is a great body, but it needs the right lenses in front of it to really shine. Im going to assume you got either a body-only or the kit with the 24-120 VR. If its the former: as soon as you can go and get yourself an 85mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.4. They're by far the greatest short telephoto/portrait lens.

If you got the 24-120 kit, then use that, but be warned that the lens isn't the greatest. Some find copies that are good, but most are pretty soft.

Thanks for your opinion! I didn't get the kit. I only got the body because I read reviews on the 24-120mm. I did get the 85mm f/1.8. I'm excited about that! Can't wait to check it out!

The 85 1.8 is a great portrait lens. enjoy it!

People who go to the D700 do one of two things: go whole-hog on professional zooms, or stick to smaller primes. Either way, you'll enjoy it.

Assuming you want zooms: the 24-70 f/2.8 or 28-70 f/2.8 are great options, as is the 24-85 f/2.8-3.5 macro. That gives you walkaround range. From there you can go wider (17-35 f/2.8 or 14-24 f/2.8) or telephoto (70-200 f/2.8 or 70-300 f/4.5-5.6).

Assuming you wanna go primes: 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, with the 85 and maybe the 135 f/2 DC or the 200 f/2 and you're covered. If you wanted wider I'd go to the 14-24, its simply that good.
