I'm guessing yes, but: check the amerage and voltage. If they match, you should be OK.

If you are going to use the EN-EL9a you'll also want to install the new firmware on your D40 to get the full benefits of the new version of the battery:

EN-EL 9,9a,9e all work well with D40. There are no compatibility issues with these batteries as far as D40 is concerned. You just have to keep in mind the amount of time you need between charging.
