Hey,
So Im new to the whole digital SLR thing and wanting to start with purchasing a Nikon D3000 with a 18-55mm zoom lens. What I want to know is: is there a major difference between the STD and Vibration Reduction zoom lenses? And is it really worth the extra $100 or so dollars to buy? Any advice or help would be appreciated... |

It's worth it but not necessary. Most people using VR lens would not go back to normal lens.
If you like numbers, rule of thumb to get sharp picture (for non moving subject) is shutterspeed = 1 / focal lenght. So 1/60 sec. if you are at 55mm. With VR, you can lower this to 1/40, 1/30 and so people can get nice pictures even lower.

VR is great for longer lenses, for an 18-55 lens it is almost a waste. Sure its nice to have, but for $100 not worth it on that lens.

VR is a need for me I reckon... You can shoot with 2-3 stop slower shutter with reasonably good quality... And for me, I don't have that steady-shot handheld (built in VR on your hand
) which allow you to shoot at slower shutter speed than average person can do...

as kirbinster said, it depends on the lens. I dont mind not having VR on my 18-70 (it'd be nice, but not a deal breaker) but I dont think i'd even consider anthing over 135mm without VR, unless it was a VERY fast lens.
