You wouldnt use a TC on a f/5.6 lens. You COULD, but you would be advised not to. TCs are generally recommended for f/4 or faster (preferably faster!) and only on the most stellar of lenses.

TCs do rob light (1 stop, 1 1/3 and 2 stops for 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0) and degrade image quality, but on the top-notch lenses and with a GOOD TC, you should still get VERY useable images, provided you know what youre doing.

What about the Sigma 150-500mm. I have looked at it a little and it seems to be not too bad and it falls into your budget guidelines and gives lots of range. If anyone has any reasons why not, please feel free to say so cause I have been thinking of getting one.
