They both make Nikon mount lenses. You probably want a sigma with the HSM designation which means it has a focus motor in the lens, so it will autofocus on your body which does not have a focus motor. Tamron has similar lenses but I am not sure what they call their motorized lens. If you can aford the money you should try to get a Nikon lens, they are generally better than the equivalent aftermarket lenses.

You didn't say what kind of lens you wanted.. I do have a suggestion, if you go on google and put in the search window "Camera lens for rent".
Some of these places do rent Tamron and Sigma lens. I do this when I am not sure what kind of lens I want or if the Tamaron or Sigma would work for what I want to use it for. Lens are big investment and renting one and trying it out is a great way to play with it before putting the money out. All that being said I tend to stay with Nikon lens for my D90 but I do have a Tamron 28-300 lens that works just great. Good luck on your search... rent camera lenses - Google Search |

I personally did not like the Sigma lens I bought, so that is a great suggestion, to rent the lenses! I must look into that myself actually. It was a 70mm-300mm lens. The Sigma lens was not as crisp as the actual (in my case Canon) Canon lenses I have. (18-55 & 70-200). The more I zoomed, the more of a blur would happen. (And no, not because I was moving, or the camera moved). I am sure that the more expensive lenses are made better though...and I know lots of people that do use them, but I have heard several of them also say they are not as crisp. (They use Nikons). Not sure if that was helpful, but maybe...
