Default My D5000 changed its file names

My images used to be named DSC_0001.nef and they changed to _DSC0001.nef. I think it happened when I changed the setting to shoot NEF+JPEG to NEF only. How can I get DSC_0001 back?

The underscore comes from using the Adobe RGB color space. It's on page 63 of the manual.

Oh, that is another setting I adjusted. But for shooting RAW, the colorspace is always Adobe RGB right? So the setting on the camera doesn't really matter?

I think you're right in that the setting doesn't matter, but I think with RAW, the color space is unassigned until the RAW is converted; it's not specifically set to Adobe RGB. I'm not a RAW geek, though, so I could be wrong.

The leading underscore ( _ ) is the indicator the camera is set to AdobeRGB. AdobeRGB is only used for JPEG or TIFF images since RAW has no color space.

Here's the complete skinny on Nikon file names:

DSC_ nnnn.xxx where nnnn is a 4 digit number between 0001 and 9999 and is assigned automatically in ascending order by the camera. .xxx is the file extension and is either .NEF(.nef) for RAW capture files, .JPG(.jpg) for JPEG images, .TIF(.tif) for TIFF images (if your Nikon DSLR can do that), .AVI(.avi) for movie files (if your Nikon DSLR can do that). .NDF(.ndf) for "dustoff reference" files.

If you have RAW + JPEG selected both files have the same name but different extensions.

If you create small copies with the small picture option the file name will begin with SSC, instead of DSC. Images recorded using retouch options will start with CSC instead of DSC and if you have a Nikon DSLR that can make stop-motion movies the files will begin with ASC instead of DSC.

There will be a test next Monday!
