I'd suggest Canon S90, Lumix LX-3 or Nikon P6000
sorry for suggesting Canon in Nikon's thread guys, but Canon performs better in compact camera I reckon

HAAAaaaaaaa.... hehehehe If you budget is limited, you'll have to sacrifice a few options but it doesn't mean you cannot create wonderfull pictures. This means you'll have to look at the entry models like the Nikon D3000. Canon as similar model but I don't know their product as much. You may also find older models like the D40 / D60 (replaced by the D3000) if you look around. They are usually cheaper. As for the Nikon L100, it's not a bad camera, but there is practically no options. I purchased one for my wife this summer. She loves taking pictures but she hates changing the settings. It's a perfect match for her in a sense that the only option you have are scene selection (night portrait, lanscape, sports, beach, sunset... there is almost 30 different one to choose from) and automatic. The 15x optic zoom is also a nice addition since you cannot change the lens but forget anything outside a sunny afternoon without a tripod at 15x. Hope this help.

The models radityopradipto are compact cameras, no dSLRs. they'd make great second cameras or backups, or as a camera for someone not looking for a dSLR, but they're still compacts.
If you're looking at the dSLR end of the maret, start with techmaster.mah's link: it'll give you a good basics. From there you should go to a camera store and take some of those cameras in-hand and see how they fit. Models to look at: Nikon D3000/D60 Canon XS/XSi These are your current entry level. YOu might be able to find a D40 somewhere, and its another great option, but be sure you get a good deal on it: they're discontinued now and should be going for CHEAP. Nikon D5000 Canon T1i These are a step up and the first thing to look at if Video in an SLR is a must for you. They give you a bit more in terms of features and power (especially in the Nikon) but theyre also more expensive. From there you can look at the Nikon D90 and Canon 40D/50D, though theyre not evenly matched. The middle of the market is a weird place to be, and can be a bit strange to muddle in.

Are the D60's still competitive in todays market? I'm just an amateur and got a great deal on one. I did notice, however, that other higher end models are out since I got mine and hope its still a good camera by comparison.
