Hello all, I am sure most of you regulars are sick of hearing about the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 vs 50mm etc etc. This is NOT one of those threads.
The forums here helped me with my decision, and I guess I'll share my logic to see if I totally had lost it. Everyone raves about the 'nifty fifty', and the newer AF-S is pretty spendy. Wanting to play with primes, I felt like I should explore more. DX and crop factor stuff led me to believe that the 35mm lens on a DX would be the closest to a 50mm prime, is this logic sound? Or are people raving about the nifty fifty on a dx frame and 75 just doesn't rhyme with anything cool? Second, cost and reviews have really helped me feel more comfortable taking the plunge, anyhow without further delay, I made a quick flickr thing to help showoff my Day 0. I love my 35mm.
I purchased it because I wanted something close to 50mm on a film camera (therefore 50mm of a FF). This was taken the night I got it.

Wow, very nice! I have to ask because I was hoping this thread could clear up some of the information about this lens, did you do much post processing on that picture? If so would you be willing to post it unprocessed? Or maybe just describe what you did?
I have been tight on time the past few days so I haven't been able to play around with it, but I definitely see the quality increase from my 18-200mm, its hard to quantify until you really play with one in your hands. The focal length is a fun one to play with too, there isn't much of a zoom to it either way, what I see through my eyes is approximately the magnification I see through the lens, the rest is just framing. I was running around my backyard yesterday and having random family members pose for me - was a fun time! |

I always do some post processing because I always shoot in RAW and I work with Lightroom. On the other hand, I take my time on the field to do as less as possible on the computer (especially for non moving subject). I always start with the Auto function in Lightroom to correct the exposure than I readjust with my own taste. For this picture, the only thing I add was getting the White Balance towards cold colors a bit. It increased the color of the flowers. This is exactly why I was looking for something close to 50mm on a Film / FF.
