The R1 is a lens-mounted flash system for in-close macro work. It's not much good for anything else, except maybe as a detail light in a complete flash setup. Even then, you'd have two catchlights instead of the nice ring.

If youre looking for a flash, then the SB-900 is the way to go for just about anything. Its pricy, but awesome. Failing that, get a SB-600 (or two, for the price of one 900!) and go to town.

What body ar you using these on? That has a pretty direct impact on how youre going to be able to use them, too. You may even be better off getting off-brand (like the Vivitars).

Hello. Thanks for your prompt reply, I am used to the CLS System of Nikon, I use both a D3, and D300 with a remote trigger for Nikon Speedlights. I use one of each (SB-600, 800 and 900) and agree with you completely, the SB900 is amazing!!. The thing is that I am trying to do some closeup work and have been finding some amazing images with the R1 system in flickr for bugs, and spiders. It is too complicated to use big speedlights for this kind of images, and I do not know any ring flash for Nikon. Is there any one you know?

Hi,
Cannot compare to other ring flash systems.
But I have the R1C1 kit. And so far like it very much for Macro.
Even purchased a third SB-200 & may go for a fourth one sometime.

And the small flashes may also be used in other normal photo session along the SB-600,800,900.
Also some books by known photographs talked highly of the R1C1 kit.

Including a link to a few macro pictures with the R1C1 this summer.

The R1C1 is designed for close ups, so go ahead and enjoy it. Like I said, you can use it in a portrait style situation in a full-on lighting setup, but it wont give out much light compared to the other speedlights.
