Post What gear would you suggest?

I'm considering buying my first DSLR. However, I don't want to spend a ton of money. I was considering getting the Nikon D3000 and later getting the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 for my first lens. What do you guys think? I've heard that the f/1.8 is a great lens plus its has a great price tag.

Since bugdet is your main stopper, you might even squeeze more accessories if you go with a body like the D60. The D3000 is the replacement but it's the same sensor. The only big improvement is the 11points focus system on the D3000.

Just something to think about

On Amazon, the D60 is $580, while the D3000 is $520.

Keep in mind: the f/1.8 version of the 50mm will NOT autofocus on the D40/40x/60/3000/5000 bodies. Only the newest f/1.4 version will, and it's in the $450 range.

Yep. If you want autofocus, you have to buy the AF-S lenses with built in motor. Or whatever the technical term is. I've had my D40 almost 2 years and it's served me well. Been an awesome little camera but I'm ready to upgrade.

I agree with amymnc regarding the D40, right now I think you can get the kit for around 450, then get yourself the new 35mm 1.8 (i just bought it yesterday and its awesome) and your in for about 650 or so and you have some good fast glass. Plus, although the 18-55 kit lens isnt pro quality, it served me well for many shoots and has good image quality.

I really dont see the D60 or D40x as good values at this point.
