Post Costco Nikon D3000 Package

Hi all. I've decided to upgrade from my regular point and shoot, and have decided to buy the NIkon D3000. However Costco is selling a package that includes the Nikon D3000 and an additional lens (55-200mm VR Lens). The package also includes a camera bag and 8gb memory card. The total package costs $799. I'm wondering if you guys think it's a good deal to get the extra lens now, or just buy the camera. I'm a newbie to DSLRs and I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

I would check out the D5000 instead, you will quickly outgrow the D3000.

Thanks for the quick response. I was seriously considering the D5000, but did not want to get something that would be too overwhelming. However, I would hate to have to upgrade from the D3000 really soon.

In terms of useability, there's virtually no difference: the D5000 simply offers so much more.

Go with the D5000. I agree with kirbinster, you'll find yourself longing for more if you get the D3000. Check out a side-by-side comparison at dpreview.com

Why would you feel overwhelming with an advanced model? You don't have to use all the features right away.

Even with my D3, I only use the shutter button and change the aperture, shutter speed and/or ISO settings most of the time.

Then you should find out which model satisfies your needs. If you really want a capable Nikon body then consider the D90 instead.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to play around with both models in the store, and then make a decision. However based on what's been said here, I'm leaning more towards the D5000. Plus Costco is selling it with the extra lens too.

The D5000 is a great little camera. I have a D300 as well, and probably use the D5000 more since it is so small and light and takes great pictures. While it lacks some of the dedicated controls of the D300, does not have a focus motor nor flash commander mode, it is a great camera and I highly recommend it.
