If he plays mainly in daylight, the 18-200 would help because of the focal length. However, if he plays indoors or at night, the f5.6 aperture at 200mm will cause you to have to bump your ISO a ton in order to get correct exposure (if you can get it at all).

I've been shooting my girlfriend's tennis matches (indoors and outdoors) and have found that the 200mm f5.6 combo is almost unusable indoors, but is fantastic when they play outside.

If you are not going to buy the body and lens kit from nikon, then open up to a sigma or tamron lens. 18 - 250 or 18 - 200. You can save some coin and learn what kind of pictures you will want to take. Then you can step up to high dollar glass for the pics you want to be "better". The nikon 18 - 105 is a great kit lens, but going with a sigma or tamron can get you more range and suffer only a bit on optics for about the same coin. Take your body to your local camera store and try on lenses. Most shops should be cool about it and you can make a decision based on a bunch of test shots.

I suggest you if you wanted tele lens, ask yourself.. for indoor or outdoor...
If you need it for outdoor, any choice won't affect it too much, but for indoor you will need those expensive lenses with fast aperture...
To be honest, Sigma and Tamron 18-200 or 18-250 are quite nice on the range, but remember that their F range are a bit... slow... (3.5-6.3 for most of them)
