Either but I'm a Nikon gal. I guess it had more to do with hearing my dad talk about how he loves his Nikon gadgets and people always buy Nikon scopes from him for their hunting gear. Just heard the name brand all my life and it stuck.
You're gonna have to beat the reds into submission with Nikon and sometimes you get yellow tinted green with Canon. That's what I've been told, and that is my own experience with my Nikon.
Lobster skin is my enemy.

Nikon can get pricey because you can't just smack any old lens on any of the DSLR's and expect it to auto focus. That's the case with D40. I'm sure Canon can get pricey too. Go to a camera store and see which one feels better in your hands, that's pretty much what it boils down to.

Upgrading your DSLR depend on budget. In my opinion, find the best features for your need before buy new ones.

The problem I would have with that scenario would be that if she said it was OK I would buy whatever it was immediately whether there was good reason or not in case she said NO when I really needed it (does that even make sense?)

Just me, but I only started thinking about upgrading my camera body when I realized that all the lenses/other equipment I was looking at cost more than the bodies I was contemplating. And then, I only actually made the leap when my camera died. But then, I'm a hobbyist photographer.
