Lightbulb Begining Photography

I have a pretty good idea of what I need, but I'd like to see what you senior member would say.

So far I am deciding to get a Nikon D40 kit

I would love to persue Children, Family, Maternity and Newborn photography

What would you consider to be the best things to buy when first starting photography? Basically what did you wish you knew you needed when you first started, or you could have used?

Thanks so much!

What photography experience do you have so far? What is your budget?

You could spend a lot of money but, if you've not used a DSLR before, an entry level like the D40 might be the best starting point (it's worked well for me so far).

In you case, consider 35 f/1.8 AF-S, SB600 flash and a tripod.
