Default Nikon D90 vs. Nikon D5000

I am looking to upgrade from my current D40 (which I love) and was curious as to which people thought was better... the D90 (which I have been looking at for months) or the new D5000.

Any advice would be appreciated! TIA!

I don't know too much about Nikon system, it's brand x compared to mine, which I started out using Canon back in the early 70's. Which is an on running joke between canon and nikon users

I did a google search and found plenty of info at: Nikon D90 or D5000 - Google Search

You have to forgive Jim buying the brand Y because it was on sale at that time.

I recommend the D90 because it has an internal focusing motor. D5000 (same as your D40) only auto focus with Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM and certain models of Tamron lenses.

Furthermore, you can use its internal flash to command other external flashes.

Thank you so much for the bit of info... I am definitely looking for one with an internal focusing motor.

D90, Hands down. It isn't that much more expensive than the D5000, and the ergonomics ALONE are worth the money. The added benefit of being able to autofocus with ALL autofocus lenses is a huge plus as has been mentioned... but seriously, just go with the D90.

Yeah, I would say D90. As I understud, D5000 is just upgraded D40/60 with tilt screen and higher resolution CMOS sensor, while D90 is really good camera.

D90, many more functions that you'll grow to want if you don't already want them (like having the built in flash being able to trigger an off camera flash, which was already mentioned )

I would get the D90, for the internal focusing. The only major advantage of the D5000 is the swivel screen, but you would probably use it only every so often, and would not be at a disadvantage without it.
