Hello All,
I am trying to attend a photography school and I found out that I need at least an 8 megapixel camera. I have the Nikon D40 (6 megapixels). I have 3 different lenses for this body. If I were to switch my body to a Nikon D40x (10mp) would my lenses still work since its basically the same thing, just higher resolution? Can someone help? Thanks!! |

Yes, the lenses will work exactly the same.
I realize that cost is probably a huge factor for you at this stage so stick with what you can afford. What other capabilities will the school require you to have in the camera? Will off camera flash become a requirement? If so, you may want to look at stretching to a D90 or something with a commander mode for the flash. I'm not familiar enough with the D80 to know if it has that. It would work with your lenses as well. Too bad the school has that silly rule anyway. I'd take the D40 pictures over the 8mp p&s cameras any day. Any chance you can plead for an exception? |

What school is this? What kind of program is it?
The D40x really isn't all that great, in some ways the D40 is better (low light). You'd probably be better served by a used D80 than a D40x.

I agree... the D80 actually has the same sensor as the D40x, and you'll have access to older lenses if you want to get them. The D80 also has a few other nice features (bracketing), and is a bit heavier.

I have the D80 and love it. Yes it does have commander mode but honestly I'm picking up the ctr-301p's or the alienbee cybersync's for my off camera flashes. I really wouldn't pick up anything less than a D80 for school. Even when I pick up the D700, or D300 (less likely), I'll keep the 80 and probably keep a wide angle on it. I realize it's a steep chunk but I would use any funds I could to get the best camera possible. However, if this is the first semester you may not need to spend money on the upgrade until after the new year.
