does the price difference justify in these two very noticeable as far as a quality of the lens?

You did mean the Tamron 18-270mm lens, right? I have both of these lenses and the quality of the glass and images they produce is very much the same. The first thing I have to say is that the Tamron is NOT a fast lens. If you want to do a lot of action shots or capture wildlife in motion that is not the lens you want. The big deal about the Tamron is the 15x magnification factor. It can zoom in on your subject like your can't believe but then it cranks away trying to focus. If only it were faster, especially around the 200mm and above range, it would hands down be the lens of choice for a lot of shots. Hope that helps you decide. They both are very good lenses and I get real good quality shots from them both.

Not sure about the Tamron but the Nikon has VR which will give you a few stops better performance. I love my 18-200VR as a good walk around lens because of its small size and wide range. It is not the sharpest lens but is good. Your 55-200VR is actually sharper at 200mm!

I compared the two and ended up with the Nikon 18-200. I needed a fast lens, and the Nikon delivers in that area. It's a bit soft at either end, but nothing that PSE can't fix.

If you really want an all around lens, your looking at the right ones. I can't say anything about the Tamron lens but I can tell you that for me the VR on the Nikon is a must have. Here's an example of a shot I took at the zoo. It was indoors, through the thick glass, & with a bunch of kids running around!
A Photographers nightmare! ![]() Camera: Nikon D80 Exposure: 0.04 sec (1/25) Aperture: f/5.6 Focal Length: 170 mm Focal Length: 169.5 mm ISO Speed: 100 Exposure Bias: 0 EV Flash: No Flash For a walk around lens, it's great! I have a hard time taking it off my camera. I'm working on that though.

Tamron 18-250mm (without VC) for value and Nikon for VR and better auto focus with AF-S.
BTW, I have the 18-200 VR that I like and a Tamron 28-300 VC (FF) that will be replaced when Nikon comes out with something similar. |
