Godbless. Now hopefully Canon will get off its ass and do the same. An fast normal prime for crop bodies is something we've been clamoring for for a long time. The Thrifty Fifty is all fine and well, but a $200 EF-S 35mm f/1.8 USM would be so much better.

Yeah, I always thought the nifty fifty was a bit of a compromise on cropped sensors, especially for D40/D60 owners who would lose autofocusing. I think there will soon be a new answer to the question "What should be next lens be?"

This is great. I was planning to get D40, and now one problem less if I do. If they would make 50mm (~75) f/1.8 with a built-in motor that would be even better.
Well, it is great, and I hope the price will not be too high.

dpreview says that the 35 f/1.8's MSRP will be €243/£199/$199. So, if the street price goes lower, then it's a definite alternative to the 50, especially for D40/D60 owners.

I can't wait for this! It is going to make the D40 a perfect street walking camera.
I love the 50mm f/1.8 but focusing can be a pain when you are trying to be discreet! I am going to be first in line when these come to the camera stores online... |

It's build quality will probably be similar to the 50mm f1.8, slightly better than the kit lens. Plastic body with a metal mount (the metal mount is currently listed in the specs). But I doubt it will be soft. An aspherical element is included in the design to correct aberrations and the aperture blades are rounded to acheive a more natural appearance of out of focus elements. Sounds to me like they've put a bit of effort into the optical design.
