It will tell you whether you are focused in front of or behind the subject and will adjust as you get closer. As far as actual useage, I'm not sure how much of an improvement it is because I've never used it. I'm sure it's better, but I'd still recommend saving for the 35mm.
Excellent. Thanks!

This should start appearing in stores within a few weeks, in the mean times, here's some interesting reading on the lens (with some sample photos):

This is odd.

(from the link)

When mounted on a DX format camera such as the Nikon D90, D60 or D40, the Nikon AF-S 35mm lens provides a focal length of 50mm (1.5x focal length multiplier). The focal length will remain the same in combination with a full-frame DSLR like the Nikon D3x, D3 and D700 cameras.
It annoys me when people say the focal length changes when you mount a lens on a DX camera. Plus he makes it sound like you can use it in full frame mode on the FX cameras. I'm sure you can but not without significant penalties in the corners.

I've never really understood the point either, for me, who cares what its equivilent is on a 35mm camera - I'm not using an old film camera, I'm using a modern digital for Pete's sake

I guess if someone was after a 50mm or 35mm specifically for the focal length and absolutely had to have it for some technical reason, then they'd be disappointed if they tried to use it with a cropped camera.. I just don't know of any particular reason why you couldn't interchange a 35mm or 50mm lens in most situations. Wouldn't you simply stand closer or further away?

sure, you just move back and forth.
the reason for it is that focal length brings a certain amount of distortion.
the human eye sees a particular length, and thats what we percieve to be "no" distortion, and thus this is best for portraits.

also, 50mm isnt really wide enough in certain circumstances.. and sometimes a wall or other object stops you from actually moving backward. so that means its time for your handy-dandy 35mm

At what point does the distortion become un-noticable? I had someone sitting next to me take my photo with a 35mm, and the photo came out looking fairly spot on, so the difference between the 35 and 50 would probably be lost on me (in terms of picking up on distortion differences).

heres a recent post which could serve as an idea.... but "how much" distortion is really not measurable i dont think.
certainly not the the inerperienced eye.

i havn't looked too deeply into this, but it happens.
wipe angles flatten, long zoomier shots compress..
(so i believe.. Google could provide an answer if you're willing to search)
as i said, i've only brushed over the subject, so couldnt provide anything definitive or in-depth.
i remember reading soemthing about it by Zeltsman on his webpage
