The D40 is a great camera. I have one in addition to my D80 and D300. Sure the others are better, but that does not mean the D40 is bad. It is small and lightweight and takes amazing pictures. It does not have all the controls that the D300 has nor the resolution, but there is a huge price difference. Do you expect a BMW one series to do everything that a seven series does?
I still use my D40 quite a bit.

I'd suggest it to someone who's never touched a DSLR before, hands down.
In my situation, I had already played around with a friends collection(D50, D80, D200 at the time) and when I later picked up the D40, it felt like a toy. Not only did it feel cheaper because of it's size and weight, but also in the sense that it was dumbed down feature-wise like menu options and metering to better target new DSLR users by not overwhelming them with things to screw up. In short, having already played with higher end Nikons, I could not live with a D40(other than the large rear LCD that my D50 does not have) because of what they removed. But, as I said, brand new DSLR users, Nikons target market for the D40, don't need to worry about those features until they are more experienced and ready to upgrade. |

The D40x & D60 also lack the internal auto-focus motor. I'm planning to upgrade from my D40x to a D90 and that's one of my major reasons. I like the sharpness and narrow depth of field of my 50mm/f1.8 lens but I have a hard time with manual focus due to my poor eyesight.
I do really like the D40x's size & weight, which is one of the reasons I bought it in the first place. |

I dislike how the D40 thinks you're dimwitted. When you select 80 ISO, it shows you an example-picture of a bright day. When you select the no flash function, it shows you pictures of babies.
Otherwise, it's quite alright I guess. It just receives hate because it's entry-level and people are a bit snobbish? |

If you look at the price point and the features, Nikon designed it for first time DSLR owners. If you've already owned a DSLR then the D40 is definitely not for you. So in that aspect, I don't think it's snobbish. They've designed it to help people learn the functions of the camera.
