Default Going to Mexico!

Hey guys,
so i'm heading to Mexico for spring break and want to take my Nikon D7000 along but had one important question-We are going whale watching, can i take my camera along? I'm not worried of dropping it in the ocean or whatever more of the wind, salt water spray all that. I thought maybe I could pick up a water proof casing of sorts? But they start at $1300+

Any suggestions would be really helpful. I just picked up my camera in December so am still learning!

Thanks,
Rohan

I bring my camera everywhere I go but there is small precaution you have to take depending of your environement.

First of all, what kind of boat are we talking about ?

Ive taken my gear whale watching, but we were in fairly large boats. The only thing I can recommend is using a cheap UV filter (you'll likely be tossing it afterwards) because salt spray will devour the coating on the front element of the lens. Other than that, be sure to have a towel handy to wipe the body down once you get back on land, and a small lens cloth handy just in case.

A cheap filter to protect the front element, as Os recommends. (Or a good filter if somebody is paying you for your images.)

I'd also consider simple water protection like this.
