Default D700 price changes over the next 12 months

So I am looking to get a FX camera. Im on the forums, Ive done my homework, I know what I am getting into as much as you can.

What I am thinking is this. I love the D700, the 800 is cool sure, but I dont need the top of the line best camera out there to take good pictures. I take good pictures with my D5000, I just feel its time to move into the bog boy camera.

Now with the D800 coming out I was curious how it would impact the price of the D700.

Will the price go down a little as everyone trades up to the newer model?

Will it go up as the manufacturer is not making them so they become harder to find?

I am a patient man, but I dont want to wait and end up spending an extra 500 dollars for my patience...

Thoughts?

Prices will go down as a few sell their D700 for D800. Just within the last month I've seen used prices go down a few hundred dollars from 2200-2000 to around 1700-1900, and think they should continue to go down to closer to 1500. Pure speculation, but thats how it usually goes when a new model comes out.

It's already starting...

I beleive there will be a huge demand for it so finding one will probably be tougher as the price goes down, although not impossible.

My 2 cents is that they are dropping some now as those that must have the newest dump their D700's - BUT the prices will likely stabilize or go up shortly after the D800 actually hits the street. The D800 is going to sell for $3,000 and will be the cheapest FX camera in the line, that may actually pull up the value of the D700 as it is a darn good camera. Many that look at a D800 will gladly pay $2,000 or more for an FX camera. But who knows, if I did I would buy D700 futures contracts

so on a related note:
Has there only been one version of the D700? It's been out for a while, are the first ones that rolled off the line the same as the most recent editions??

I wouldn't count on seeing a huge price drop in new D700s. Most places have had them back ordered for a while, and as it's now discontinued by Nikon, there aren't likely to be too many new ones sitting around waiting to be sold. Add to that, the fact that a lot of people are disappointed in both the specs and the price of the D800, there's likely to be a lot of demand for the remaining D700s available, which usually means increases in price. You could see a drop in the used market as the D800 starts shipping, but I wouldn't expect it to last for too long. I'm with kirbinster, if I could buy commodity futures in the D700, I would be all over it. I suspect this is going to be one of the more sought after used cameras until Nikon releases a lower MP, higher FPS, FX camera, in the sub $3K price range.
