really? So instead of buying a full frame camera you'd rent a MF because the FF had too much resolution??
What about the D700 at 12 mpix, you'd buy that but not the D800?

For only $400US difference in price I'd 'suffer' through the hi-rez d800 over the d700.

My feelings is WHY? I already feel my D300 RAW shots and conversions put enough of a demand on my 2TB of disk space. I know, I know, memory is cheap, but the inconvenience of disk upgrades is a PITA. With that many photo sites jammed into the sensor, it'll be interesting to see how well it handles high ISO noise. Sure, great resolutions along with being able to make very clean crops, but my question is how many will feel a need to have that level of resolution?

+1 I'd prefer to be able to make full use of the extra resolution and not be held back by diffraction issues. The D4 sensor is more interesting to me

I'd sure as hell buy it over a D3x. And a MF won't attach to my 800mm lens.

I'd guess it's primarily aimed at studio work, where this would not be a problem. Unless Nikon has worked some new magic on the sensor ...

Too much resolution - really. I am sure if you want you can shoot in a lower res mode when you need to save space. I would always like more resolution -- I can down size after the fact.

I don't expect this to be Nikon's entry level FX body for long. At 36 MP and 4 FPS it's not going to appeal to a lot of the working pros who already shoot with a D700. I suspect in less than 18 months we'll see an iterative release with nearly identical features except for a smaller sensor, with the benefits that should bring in both low light performance and more frames per second.

Diffraction. Even on the E version, without the AA filter, you're going to be running into diffraction around f/8-f/11, and only the very very best lenses will be able to take full advantage of the resolution.

There's a difference between FX 36mp and MF 36mp.

Frankly, for what I do, I'll never need more than 12 for every day use; those instances in which I want more, I have stitching. Most of my printing is 8x10-16x20, stretching occasionally to 20x30, but when I know I want to print something big, I take the steps ahead of time and stitch.
