Yes, because everyone has $9000 to drop on a 10LB, 15" long lens...

I had the 80-200 (two ring not push-pull) and sold it and bought at 70-200VR. The reason I did this was two fold. The 80-200 was heavier which further aggregated the fact that it did not have VR. The VR makes a big difference if you are going to be using it hand-held.

The issue I had, was when the FBI and Homeland security showed up at my house. I was shooting a wedding in downtown Orlando, which is only about 30 miles away, from my roof. The house was surrounded and guns drawn on me. - Brett Turley

I accidently made this mistake and this lens magnified the light so much that I completely incinerated 4 houses on my block......sorry. - Steve Florain

I love to have this lens to scare professional photographers away and to get more business
a) They will run away before I take any shot
b) Mislead noobs to think I am a professional as I have a scary lens
c) Capture prefect emotion especially fear! "Actually stole the souls of people I photographed with it. -TinMan"

I twisted my head and think, could the D4 + 80-200mm be the alternative..

As D4 can have 2.7 crop factor, the 80-200mm with tele-converter 2X will have 80mm-1054mm focal length which is only about $7000, a very cost effective camera model ;D

These are quotes from the Amazon reviews of that 200-500 2.8, although funny as hell, I kind of doubt many of those people actually used the lens.

You have a very strange idea of cost effective.
